The long-term future of cars almost definitely doesn’t involve the internal combustion of fossil fuels. Toyota is keenly aware of this truth, and that’s why the brand is readying a fuel-cell car for its premium Lexus brand by 2020. But that model won’t represent Toyota’s first major foray into hydrogen-fuel-cell powered vehicles, as the brand became the first to offer a fuel-cell car for direct purchase last year, in the form of the, er, aesthetically challenged Mirai. But before fuel-cell-powered and battery-electric vehicles rule the autonomous roads of the future, the interim will be filled with lots and lots of hybrids.

This year alone the automaker has been busy showcasing facelifts, new models and concepts. Earlier in the year at Detroit, the automaker released the Lexus LC500, a striking and powerfully equipped coupe. Recently, the automaker released 2018 Lexus LC 500h, a hybrid version of the coupe, which was displayed at the Geneva Auto Show. However, we will have to wait a little bit longer before we see the model on public roads. Read along to find out what Toyota offers on the hybrid version of the LC500 coupe.

In a sense, Multi Stage picks up where Two-Mode left off, and adds quite a bit of capability in the process. Chief engineer Koji Sato says one of the main goals was to eliminate the rubber-band feel of a traditional CVT, and to make throttle inputs feel more directly related to what the car is actually doing. No car company, certainly not one as renowned for refinement as Lexus, wants its new model compared to a golf cart.

At the technical preview we attended, Sato wasn’t quite ready to reveal how much the LC500h weighs, but he did tell us the regular LC should weigh about the same as the BMW 6-series. So taking into account the extra 150 pounds or so added by the lithium-ion battery pack and associated electronics, the hybrid LC should weigh roughly 4400 pounds.

2018 Lexus LC 500h Engine

The hybrid drive-train is the most significant difference with the LC500. The LC500h is motivated by a new system the automaker has christened as the “Multi Stage Hybrid System”.  The system offers a sporty and more engaging driving experience. It pairs a 3.5 L, V-6 petrol mill with a 44.6kW lithium-ion battery pack.

The 2018 Lexus LC500h coupe is powered by a new hybrid system dubbed the “Multi Stage Hybrid System”.  The system has been crafted with a more engaging and sporty driving experience in mind.  It features a 3.5 L V-6 gasoline mill which combines with a powerful electric motor backed by a 44.6 kW lithium ion battery pack.

Lexus debuted the 2018 LS 500h, with its Multi Stage Hybrid System, at the Geneva Motor Show and the numbers are rather impressive. Using a detuned version of the 3.5-liter V-6 and twin electric motor combination found in the LC 500h, the LS 500h produces a combined 354 horsepower. This may seem like a fairly conservative number for such a large luxury sedan, but the Japanese automaker reports that the LS 500h will hit 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, a 10th of a second quicker than the outgoing LS 600h. This is most likely thanks to the 20 percent-smaller battery than the nickel-metal hydride unit found in the old LS 600h.

The 2018 Lexus hybrid is going to be powered by a combination of a powerful electric motor and a traditional V6 engine with the displacement of 3.5 liters. The electric motor will be operated by a set of durable lithium-ion battery. This combination offers the new model hybrid the required power of 354 ponies and the required torque of 257 pounds per foot. This will 113 ponies less than the power offered by the V8 engine of the LC 500. However, this combination offers better acceleration to the vehicle that makes it attain the 60 mph speed from the start in 4 seconds, whereas the LC 500 hits the same mark in 4.5 seconds.

The petrol mill is capable of producing 295 horses and 257 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the electric motor adds 59 horses to bump output to 354 horses. Although official acceleration results are not yet out, Toyota estimates that the coupe will run from 0-60 mph in 5 seconds, a  second slower than the LC500.
