2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Review

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado wears its pickup personality on its sleeve; a big, brash-looking truck that’s available in a configuration for nearly every need. It’s a work truck when it needs to be and a refined, quiet mile-eater at other times.

To learn more about the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 of this generation, read our updates from a full year of living with a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. We cover everything from seat comfort to real-world fuel economy. Please note that the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 differs from our long-term Silverado 1500 with an updated touchscreen, revised styling and availability of an eight-speed automatic. It’s the same generation, though, so most of our observations still apply.

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado brings tastefully conservative good looks, a range of engines and powertrain choices, and excellent towing and hauling capabilities to one of the toughest markets in the U.S. Chevrolet’s reputation over the decades has made its Silverado pickup one of the top sellers, coming in at a perpetual number two behind the Ford F-150. But right behind it are the Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and even its sibling, the GMC Sierra. Prices and equipment span the gamut from a basic work truck costing less than $30,000 to a full-blown High Country with all the trimmings costing nearly twice that. While it doesn’t offer a diesel, the Silverado’s range of gas-powered engines keeps it competitive in fuel economy and power without sacrificing capability.

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado comes with your choice of three engines. The base V6 has plenty of power for daily driving and is the most fuel-efficient. The larger V8s feel stronger and are better choices for towing and hauling. The Silverado rides smoothly even over imperfect roads, and it has pretty good handling.

On top of that, it didn’t really change much since it was released which means its main rival is already well ahead. However, in order to spring a bit more life into the truck before an all-new version will be released; GM unveiled the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a short while ago. Unfortunately, this new model is nothing more than just a mild upgrade over its predecessor.

A number of notable additions for 2018 further bolster the Silverado’s wide-ranging appeal. They were options last year, but a rearview camera and 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard on even the humble Work Truck trim. The eAssist package, which adds an engine stop-start system for improved fuel economy in city driving, is now available nationwide the package was previously sold in a limited number of California dealerships.

The frame, as well as the running gear of the new Silverado, didn’t change a bit since it was released back in 2012. This means the current model still uses only average brakes as well as a rather old suspension system. The latter is great when the truck is loaded, but it might feel a bit too jumpy when there is nothing into the bed. This is especially clear on the base models which are quite a bit lighter than the higher-end versions of the truck. The new 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is still available in 3 different cab configurations and with three different bed sizes. This gives the buyer a great selection, but unfortunately, there are some combinations which are simply not available between the different cabs and beds.

The base engine in the Chevy Silverado is a 4.3-liter V6 that puts out 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. The V6 has ample power for driving around town or on the highway. This engine probably won’t hold you back when it comes to towing and hauling light loads, but the larger engines are better choices for heavier duty.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Specs

Everyone very much hope at the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 release is better than the previous version. So we’ll review the interior, exterior and some other features of the new car in 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Hopefully review the specifications of this car, can help you in choosing your dream car.

A volume seller across the country, the 2017 Silverado 1500 remains abundant and pricing is generally favorable. As usual, the mid-range LT tends to carry the largest discounts. Note that the exclusive High Country variant is extremely hard to find, but is now included in most cash offers.

Base models of the 2018 Chevy Silverado benefit from the same sensible layout, ample storage, and nicely textured plastics as the rest of the lineup. That’s not to say there aren’t benefits for paying more; move up the trim ladder and you’ll get even higher-end materials, and the top-of-the-line High Country lays on the luxury nice and thick. Beyond creature comforts, there are three cab sizes to choose from: traditional regular cab, a double cab with some extra space behind the front seats, or the crew cab, which can seat up to six in surprising comfort.

The look of the dashboard remained basically unchanged since the truck was originally released. However, there are far more available features than before. The infotainment system is one of the best in its class while the clever layout of the dashboard makes everything really easy to reach. As a bonus, the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 also comes with far better materials than its predecessor. This is especially obvious on the range-topping models that get far better leather than before as well as new aluminum inserts instead of the usual plastic. The new High Country version of the car also gets unique wood inserts which do elevate the feel inside the cabin.

Since it was revamped the truck didn’t really receive much attention on the exterior. Well, this is also the case with the new 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 version of the truck. It still boasts the same front end as its predecessor with the massive grille, split-look headlights, and the massive air dam. However, the base models now come with Xenon lamps while the higher end versions get LED headlights as standard. On top of that GM also added two new trim levels into the mix. There is the mid-range Custom which is similar to the LS version but with 20-inch rims and body colored exterior inserts. The High Country, on the other hand, gets a lot of chrome and 20 inch chromed wheels while also boasting the usual features of the range-topping LTZ model.

Yet it doesn’t go overboard, instead presenting a relatively conservative face to the world compared to its sometimes garish competitors. Granted, the Silverado LTZ grille is a big chunk o’ chrome, but the rest of the lineup is more tasteful and subdued. The High Country offers a more luxurious take on the full-size pickup, and it looks the part with generous — but tasteful — uses of chrome. Unlike the F-150, the Silverado doesn’t offer a built-in stepladder, but it does offer an optional rear-bumper step.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Engine

The base version of the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado comes equipped with a 4.3 liter naturally aspirated V6. Even though this has been around for ages, it still is good for up to 285 horsepower and a rather impressive 305 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range GM is also offering their well known 5.3 liters naturally aspirated V8. This is a new unit which still offers 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Both of these get a six speed automatic as standard, but GM is now offering an eight speed as an option with the larger engine. The range-topping models are still being powered by the highly acclaimed 6.2 liter V8.

The Silverado’s suspension soaks up big dips with ease, although that same capability also means it’s sometimes floaty off-road or around town. The steering on the other hand feels nicely weighted, and with enough angle that the Silverado is more maneuverable than you might think. Of the three engines available, we recommend the 5.3-liter V8. The V6 offers better fuel economy but feels sluggish, while the 6.2-liter V8’s extra power isn’t enough to offset its fuel-economy hit. The 8-speed automatic translates to fuel economy that’s close to the EcoBoost V6 in the Ford F-150, but unfortunately throttle response feels particularly lazy.

There are three engine selections for the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. The base engine is a 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6, which leads in fuel economy, but seriously lags the others in horsepower; skip it. At the other end is the 6.2-liter V8, which handily out-powers everything else, but fuel economy suffers more than we prefer. The Goldilocks setup is the 5.3-liter V8, which offers more power than the V6, but better fuel economy than the bigger V8. All engines are available with 4-wheel drive (4WD) instead of the standard 2-wheel-drive (2WD) setup, and the standard 6-speed automatic gets supplanted with an 8-speed automatic with the 6.2-liter V8 and 5.3-liter V8 LTZ. Everything runs on regular unleaded, with the V6 and 5.3-liter V8 capable of running on E85 ethanol blend.
