In BMW’s mushrooming model range, clarity of purpose is getting harder to find. Take, for example, the 4-series Gran Coupe. It’s a coupe; it must be. It says so right in the name. Besides, it’s an even-numbered model, which in BMW nomenclature means coupe. But it’s also a four-door, so most people will think of it as a sedan. It’s closely related to the 3-series sedan, albeit with a lower and sleeker roofline. And while in profile it appears to have a distinct trunk, the lid actually incorporates the rear glass, thus making it a hatchback. So the 4-series Gran Coupe is at once a coupe, a sedan, and a hatchback.

The BMW 4 Series just received its mid-cycle facelift for the 2018 model year, an update that also brought a similar refresh for the Gran Coupe model. Introduced in 2014, one year after the 3 Series Coupe became the 4 Series, the Gran Coupe gave BMW access to a new segment of compact four-door coupes. One of BMW’s weirdest offerings, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door version of the 4 Series coupe, which in turn is based on the 3 Series sedan.

BMW’s 4-Series family has reached the midway point in its life cycle and has come in for a little nip and tuck to keep it looking fresh. The updates affect the entire range which consists of the 4-Series, 4-Series Convertible, 4-Series Gran Coupe and high-performance M4 and M4 Convertible.

The BMW 4 Series and M4 coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe get a major refresh for 2018, but you’d be forgiven for not noticing on first glance. Despite a comprehensive overhaul, this is still the same basic car that debuted in America in 2013. We saw the refreshed global 4 Series last week, but BMW released the details on the US version today.
