2018 Audi Q5 Review

The 2018 Audi Q5 is a five-seater compact crossover SUV that’s all-new for 2018 and squares off against competitors like the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and the Jaguar F-Pace.

Initially, the Q5 is available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that sends power to all four wheels, but a more performance-oriented SQ5 will follow with 354 hp from a turbo V-6. The Q5 remains available in Premium, Premium Plus, and Platinum trim levels, with a fairly high degree of customizability within those three variations.

After managing to withstand competition from the likes of Jaguar F-Pace and BMW X3, Audi has finally decided to release the 2nd generation of the premium SUV. Although it might not look like it, the new generation has been extensively revised to strengthen its positioning in the tough premium SUV segment. However, the automaker has not made sweeping changes, as that would be detrimental considering the current design has already established a strong customer base. As such, the new model is easily recognizable as the Q5 we are already familiar with. The automaker has upgraded the SUV’s exterior, introduced the latest technologies in the industry as well as hooked it up with a nicely trimmed cabin. The new 2018 Audi Q5 is underpinned by a shorter version of the MLB Evo platform that also underpins the Q7. As a result, the model is very light, which has helped improve its efficiency compared to the predecessor model.

2018 Audi Q5 Specs

Everyone very much hope at the 2018 Audi Q5 release is better than the previous version. So we’ll review the interior, exterior and some other features of the new car in 2018 Audi Q5. Hopefully review the specifications of this car, can help you in choosing your dream car.

It may not look all that much different for 2018, but the Q5 is all-new underneath. Its exterior follows Audi’s more sinewy design language that emphasizes a shapely belt-line and a nose that appears longer than before. The difference is mostly in the detailing, with standard HID and optional LED headlamps projecting the way forward and flanking the latest version of Audi’s shield grille. At the rear, the Q5 sports a tailgate that could have been carried over from last year, but new LED lighting cleans up its rear lights.

After the Q4 got it, it was only obvious that the Q5 would also feature it; I am talking about the new Audi Virtual Cockpit, which features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. In addition to displaying digital instruments, the screen also displays information on the vehicle’s navigation system, audio system and other systems.  Via the button placed on the steering wheel, one can alter the screen to display one’s menu of preference. As such, it is possible to have a 12.3-inch color map behind the steering wheel and one can always flick back the screen to display the usual large dials.

On the sides, the vehicle features an aluminum trim on the surrounds of the windows, power adjusted and heated side mirrors integrated with LED turn signals and 19-inch wheels; one can also order the Q5 with 20-inch wheels.

The SQ5 features some slightly different exterior trim and its own alloy wheels, but it’ll take someone pretty familiar with the brand’s lineup to spot the differences.

The first new feature that strikes you at the first glance is the new horizontal grille that replaces the outgoing model’s grid-like design. Like the outgoing model, the new Q5 still features LED headlights. The headlights are also integrated with LED DRLs. In addition, the Q5 also comes with fog lights at both the front and rear. Still at the front, the vehicle features new heated windshield nozzles.

2018 Audi Q5 Engine

The sole engine is an upgraded, turbocharged 2.0 L, TFSI 4-cylinder mill good for 252 horses and 273 lb-ft of torque.  The good thing about this engine is that peak torque is available from only 1600 rpm.  It powers the Q5 to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7 seconds. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission system along with the automaker’s new Quattro ultra AWD system.

Underhood, the Q5 once again sports a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder as its base engine, but it has been upgraded to the automaker’s latest unit. Nearly the same engine that also powers the larger Q7, the Q5’s engine works well in this smaller application. It’s mated exclusively to a 7-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, which now disconnects the driveshaft going to the rear wheels to save fuel in most situations. Unlike rivals, however, Audi’s system spins up in a fraction of a second to apportion power rearward when needed, and it can sense when a driver is beginning to encounter adverse conditions that require a little extra traction.

The late-introduction SQ5 makes use of a new turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 fitted to the latest S4 and S5, with peak output rated at 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Mated to an 8-speed automatic and driving all four wheels, the engine will hustle the SQ5 from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

In addition, Audi’s AG chairman, Rupert Stadler pointed out that the company may still offer a 3.0 L, V-6 TDI in the North American market. This engine pumps out 286 horses and a whole 457 lb-ft of torque.  In addition, the engine has a 13% better fuel efficiency than the same engine in predecessor models. If this arrives then it will give the model serious influence in the segment.

One note, before we get started: we have not yet driven the SQ5, which features a stiffened up suspension, its own steering tuning, and an optional air suspension. The SQ5 also uses a new 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 rated at 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It comes exclusively with an 8-speed automatic and it can scoot from 0-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds.
