It happens every few years: An old letter turns up in the mail, delivered late. Really late. In 2009, Britain’s Royal Mail delivered a love letter sent during World War II to a military base 64 years after it was written. Three letters addressed to a New York woman in 1969 including two birthday cards spent 45 years missing before they wound up in her old mailbox in 2014. And a postcard mailed in France in 1877 finally arrived after taking 138 years to travel all of six miles.

Higher trims add a gigantic panoramic sunroof, a Fender premium audio system, a navigation system, power front seats and automatic headlights.

The Alltrack looks like a butched-up SportWagen: The bumpers are different and there are silver (instead of black) roof rails, but the biggest styling change is the addition of black plastic lower cladding all around the car that makes it look more rugged. There’s also 0.6 inch of added ride height and an extra 1.4 inches of ground clearance, bringing the total up to 6.9 inches.

The AllTrack is based on the Sportwagen and in fact resembles the latter in many fronts.  However, the AllTrack looks more muscular than the standard Sportwagen. It stretches 0.6 inches longer and has a better ground clearance of 6.9 inches compared to the Sportwagen’s 5.5 inches.

2017 Volkswagen Golf AllTrack Engine

Well, many enthusiasts will point fingers at the ‘AllTrack’s” lack of a complimenting power hike to go with the additional off road potential. The model comes with a sole turbocharged 1.8 L, 4-cylinder mill capable of 170 hp and 199lb-ft of torque. The automaker is quick to point out that maximum torque is available from only 1,600 rpm.

If you want go-anywhere capability in a fun-to-drive wagon, the Golf Alltrack is the ride for you and it’s a 10Best winner, too. A 170-hp 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder pairs with a six-speed automatic and a brake-based all-wheel-drive system. The raised suspension provides 6.9 inches of ground clearance, but it doesn’t deteriorate the Alltrack’s athletic attitude. A 6.5-inch touchscreen features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking are optional.

The 2017 Alltrack shares the SportWagen’s powertrain: a 170-horsepower, turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that makes a gratifying 199 pounds-feet of torque. The Alltrack also has standard 4Motion all-wheel drive and comes only with Volkswagen’s six-speed, dual-clutch automatic (a manual option is coming in early 2017). VW chose wisely in stealing from the SportWagen. Peak torque comes on at just 1,600 rpm, and it feels lively and peppy, both on- and off-road.

The mill mates to the automaker’s DSG automatic transmission system.  The new model is EPA rated at 22 mpg in city and 30 mpg on highway drives. It is less economical compared to the Sportwagen because it is 300 pounds heavier. The system is controlled via paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. This is particularly important when overtaking at high speeds on highways. A 6-speed manual gearbox is also on offer.
