The Colorado was only upgraded recently for the 2015 model year. As such the exterior is still fresh and won’t undergo any significant changes.  Just like the outgoing model, the new Colorado features the similar grille with aero shutters. The grille is flanked by LED headlights and LED fog lights. The model also features an aluminum hood.

All versions have six airbags, stability control with trailer-sway control, and hill start assist; Z71 models also get hill descent control. Forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems are available, and a rearview camera is standard.

On the connectivity front, all Colorados come with a USB port and touchscreen-controlled audio. Bluetooth is available, as is an 8.0-inch touchscreen (on LT and Z71 Colorados) and multiple USB ports for charging and music storage. Navigation is an option, as is GM’s OnStar service and 4G LTE data connectivity. New for 2016, the Colorado’s MyLink interface now incorporates Apple CarPlay, which uses the truck’s touchscreen as a mirror display for some iPhone functions like messaging, mapping, and streaming audio.

The interior styling of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is largely unchanged from the outgoing model. The model is offered in 6 trim levels similar to the 2016 model. Base models feature manual climate control while the Colorado Z71 models feature a single-zone climate control system. A 6-speaker sound system and a 4.0-inch color display are offered as standard features.

nside the Colorado, there’s a much closer kinship with the Silverado. It’s rugged with an upscale finish, and better finishes than you’ll find in any Tacoma or Frontier. There’s a beefy steering wheel with lots of control buttons, a shield-shaped dash wearing the primary controls and an LCD display, and a shifter mounted on a rather wide console that splits the cabin down the middle (at least in front). It’s truck-ish enough, but there’s more than a passing resemblance to the latest General Motors sedans in the bolstering of the seats, the intersection of trim on the doors and dash, and even in the soft-touch, aluminum-look trim itself.

On the sides, the truck still features triple sealed doors, which in addition to improving the truck’s aerodynamics also makes the cabin much quieter. The sides also feature gripper tires.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Engine

Except for the V-6 mill that has been revised, the lineup of the engines remains similar to the outgoing model. The base mill is still a 2.5 L, 4-cylinder power-plant that produces 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. This engine mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. Well, for long-distance travelers or those who haul or tow large loads, the automaker still offers the Duramax mill. It is a 2.8 L, turbo diesel mill good for 181 hp and a whopping 369 lb-ft of torque. The mill returns 31 mpg on the highway when one chooses it in 2WD.

Entering its third model year, the Chevrolet Colorado has proven to be a formidable effort in the mid-size pickup segment. For the new year, the truck, which is a near-twin of the GMC Canyon, gains a new 3.6-liter V-6 engine that’s the same size as last year’s model but promises to be more fuel efficient and refined.

The new V-6 is shared with a host of other GM products, and in this application it is rated at 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Not only is the engine, with its direct injection and cylinder displacement tech new, but so is the 8-speed automatic transmission that accompanies it. The new V-6 is marginally smoother than before and its power is spread across a slightly wider band, but the big boon here is actually the 8-speed automatic. It’s a quick, crisp-shifting unit. Our only kvetch is that it lacks a separate gate or steering wheel-mounted paddles for manual shifting, something particularly useful in hilly areas with a trailer hitched up out back.

The automaker has upgraded its variable valve timing system for its intake and exhaust sides. Its direct fuel injection system has also been upgraded. The engine also features Active Fuel Management, which is a first for the V-6 mill. This enables the mill to operate as a V-4 during low-load situations which helps enhance the truck’s fuel economy. The new upgrades add three horsepower and 6 lb-ft of torque making the engine now produce 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque.
