There’s an entirely new family of Audi A5 models on the way next year, for the 2018 model year. And while that gives the 2017 Audi A5 lineup lame-duck status, we certainly wouldn’t discourage you from this year’s model.

The current A5 (and S5) lineup is one of Audi’s best-designed, best-conceived affordable luxury coupes ever—a car with styling that’s been widely imitated and a cabin layout and overall ambience that’s considered a benchmark by designers.

2017 Audi A5 Specs

Everyone very much hope at the 2017 Audi A5 release is better than the previous version. So we’ll review the interior, exterior and some other features of the new car in 2017 Audi A5. Hopefully review the specifications of this car, can help you in choosing your dream car.

The design of the elegant convertible follows predictable Audi themes with the strong shoulder line and steeply raked rear window angle lifted from the Coupe, along with Audi’s trademark grille and the latest signature LED headlamps. Short front and rear overhangs give it a sporty stance while maximising space in the four-seat interior. At 4,673mm long, the new Audi A5 Cabriolet is 47mm longer than the previous model.

The interior of the cabriolet has been completely overhauled. The automaker has replaced all outdated features on the outgoing model with the latest equipment in the industry. The cabin itself is much roomier than that of the outgoing model. This is courtesy of the extra 0.6-inch wheelbase. As a result, shoulder room for front passengers has increased by an inch while knee room for rear passengers has increased by 0.7 inches. The new design derives its inspiration from its Coupe sister.

There’s valuable additional interior convenience technology, too, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, along with a wireless charging pad located below the center armrest. It’s an impressive roster of equipment.

If the A5 is too subdued outside, its interior makes up for it. Lifted almost directly from the A4, the well-appointed cabin is remarkably intuitive yet technology-rich. Even a base A5 will come with leather seats and a moonroof at a price Audi hints will undercut the C300 4Matic’s. And no C300 can be loaded up with as many goodies. Our favorite is the user-configurable Virtual Cockpit, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel that can be set to look like basic gauges, a borderline sensory overload map with Google satellite imagery, or a combination of the two. Buttons on the three-spoke steering wheel cycle through various screens with ease, but much of the information is repeated on a similarly crisp, iPad-esque display above the central air vents. That monitor is for Audi’s MMI Plus infotainment system controlled by an enormous rotary knob topped with a touchpad located just behind eight welcome preset buttons. Owners can communicate with MMI Plus via a smartphone app, and when they’re in the car there are two USB ports available for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connection; Qi-equipped devices can be charged wirelessly on an inductive pad. An optional Driver Assistance package for the A5 will allow some degree of autonomous driving for those who buy a sporty coupe but don’t actually want to drive it all the time.

The flanks look unchanged. However, the rear looks sportier than that of the outgoing model courtesy of new horizontal lines that make it appear wider despite it being actually narrower than the previous version. The rear window is flatter. The rear also features modified LED taillights as standard. Dimension-wise, the cabriolet is longer than the outgoing model. It stretches 15.3, inches long (1.9 inches longer than its predecessor).

At the front, the cabriolet retains the single frame grille similar to that of the coupe. The grille is wider and flatter than on the outgoing model. Its hood retains the same power dome and muscular lines. Flanking the grille are Xenon headlights as standard with an option for LED or Matrix units that feature dynamic turn signals. The bumper features sharper lines.

The all-new dashboard helps reinforce a feeling of spaciousness, too, a byproduct of its slim design, enabled by an 8.3-inch freestanding central infotainment screen and a long, all-but-uninterrupted band of air vents. Small details including a bezel-less rearview mirror add to the airy nature of the cabin, which is itself slightly larger thanks to the car’s longer wheelbase. The moonroof now slides back properly, too, a welcome improvement over the original A5’s frustrating tilt-only unit.

Cabin materials are all top-notch, as is the available tech, which includes Audi’s optional 12.3-inch reconfigurable gauge cluster display known as the Virtual Cockpit. It’s a system we Roadshow editors have fallen hard for in the TT sports car and A4 sedan, and it’s excellent here, too. In fact, the whole interior draws heavily from the new B9-generation A4, which makes sense, as the two ride atop versions of the same MLB EVO modular chassis.

It features onboard SIM card for free web access. It adds a Wi-Fi hotspot that supports 8 devices. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports are offered as standard features. Inductive Smartphone charging and a premium Bang and Olufsen audio system are optional.

2017 Audi A5 Engine

The 2017 Audi A5 isn’t lacking anything, performance-wise,  just don’t expect base models to be true performance cars. That said, across the A5 lineup, there’s solid performance from its standard 220-horsepower turbocharged inline-4 and standard all-wheel drive. In the S5 you step up to a supercharged V-6, while the top-of-the-line RS 5 gets a V-8.

The first mill on offer is a 2.0 L TFSI mill good for 252 hp. The next engine is a 2.0L, TDI good for 190 hp. Further up is a 3.0 L, TDI engine good for 218 horses. There is also a 2.0 L, TFSI engine capable of 190 horses as well as a 3.0 L, TDI engine that is good for 286 horses. The engine have been modified to produce around 17% more power are 22% more fuel-efficient compared to the predecessor.

In coupe or convertible form, the A5 moves quickly and responsively enough with its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, making 220 horsepower. Coupes offer a choice of a 6-speed manual or the 8-speed automatic, either of which makes the most of the inline-4’s ample powerband; although if you want a convertible, it’s automatic-only. All A5 models include standard quattro all-wheel drive.

While in its home market the A5 will have no fewer than five engine choices (three diesel and two gas), in the States, we’ll be limited to the Volkswagen Group’s well-known 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. (The uplevel S5 gets a forced-induction 3.0-liter V-6 as before, but this time it’s turbocharged instead of supercharged.) This is no bad thing, as the TFSI four is a torque monster, putting up 273 pound-feet of the stuff from just 1,600 rpm, with peak horsepower 252 coming in at 5,000 rpm.
